In 2020 my sister announced that she was getting married. I was very happy for her and had no idea that she would ask me to make her dress. Even though the idea scared me a little (I had never done such a crazy project and we live more than 1000 km apart), I was very excited by her proposal.

To help me make this book, I chose the ebook and the customizable patterns from Atelier Charlotte Auzou. I appreciated the detailed explanations, which were always well illustrated, learning new techniques, being guided through the steps of the production, in the choice of fabrics and the wide choice of combinations/customization of the patterns which allowed me to find the perfect assembly.

Following the advice in the ebook (and for fun too), we went through the "trying on dresses in stores" stage to find the type of model that she liked and suited her. Once she had made her choice, we made an appointment at Stragier to go and choose the fabrics.

It was a real pleasure for me to make her this gift and to see her wear this unique dress, the one she had chosen for one of the most beautiful days of her life.

After 6 years together and a beautiful proposal made at the Grand Canyon, we decided to embark on the adventure of marriage. We wanted a wedding that resembled us in the organization, the decoration and even for my dress. My mother has been passionate about sewing and patchwork since she was 15 years old. She made a lot of clothes and Carnival costumes when my sister and I were little.

We wanted to celebrate our wedding in two stages, at the town hall and at the church. I wanted a jumpsuit for the town hall and two sober and refined dresses for the second part. It seemed obvious to me to ask my mother to make the outfits of my dreams. It was a major project even for an experienced seamstress because there was a jumpsuit and a dress to make in less than 8 months. We postponed our wedding because of the health crisis, which allowed us to have a more comfortable deadline. My mother decided to take up the challenge even if she was a little stressed at the idea of not ending up as planned.

From the search for inspiration, patterns, fabrics, I loved sharing this project with my mom, spending unique moments even in the most delicate passages of the realization. I am super proud of her, she made exactly what I wanted, the creations were beautiful and comfortable. I was so happy to wear outfits that she made with love for my wedding.

I think you have to study the model to make carefully before starting. I found inspiration on the internet, I tried on dresses in stores because I wanted to make sure that the style corresponded well to my body shape (this step only confirmed that I did not want to buy my dress). We had chosen to start with a common fabric between the jumpsuit and the dress and to choose different laces. We did tests to check that the fabrics held up well and that they did not crease. It is important to have enough time to test the different fabrics, we did at least 3 tests to select the fabric on which the laces were sewn.

Sew a long wedding dress with a train with the customizable sewing patterns from Atelier Charlotte Auzou

Testimony of Kelly's mother who sewed her dress

The challenge was a great responsibility for me when my daughter asked me to make her wedding dress. She knew that she would not find what she wanted in stores, after much research. Despite having a good foundation in sewing, I had never done such a project before. It was the beginning of a "great adventure" that took me a lot of time to complete.

The ideal is to start the project well in advance of the big day. I also had time to make another dress, but short this time, with the different custom patterns that we wanted to use for the wedding dress. This gave us a good idea of how the final dress would look and what adjustments needed to be made. My daughter had chosen Charlotte Auzou's patterns (top "Fronces et col victorienne", bottom "jupe longue tendue avec traine" and sleeves "puffy") because they matched the sketch she had made of her ideal wedding dress! For the base of the dress, skirt and bodice, we chose a muslin. My daughter wanted to be able to remove this overskirt during the evening and raise the train of her dress.

I really recommend the e-book "My wedding dress", it was a great help to me for sewing techniques, the choice of different fabrics according to the models, materials and haberdashery adapted to the dress pattern. It was essential for me and taught me a lot of things.

In conclusion, sewing your wedding dress allows you to have exactly the desired model, the quality of the fabric and the color of your choice. You can, as you create, modify the model and adapt it as best as possible according to your desire, your body shape and above all have a unique result! Despite the stress it caused me, I am still very proud and have the immense joy of having made my daughter happy for the most beautiful day of her life!

Kelly's Testimony

From the beginning, I wanted my mother to sew my wedding dress, for me it was obvious because I wanted it to have a special meaning. I wanted it to be timeless, elegant and quite covering because I was getting married in October. It is true that in any case, I think I would have had trouble finding what I wanted in the shops! I loved following the making of my dress, the choice of fabrics with my mother, the fittings and the final result which was better than my expectations. These are very good memories, perhaps more for me than for her, who was very stressed, but I never doubted her abilities.

Getting into sewing by chance 5 years ago. And then one day receiving a phone call from her little sister announcing her wedding and this crazy desire (for me, not for her) that I make HER dress for her civil wedding. Not being able to say no, crying with joy at the trust she places in me, an amateur seamstress. Suddenly this visceral fear that invades me: would I be up to it? That's how HER idea of making a wedding dress came to me.

In the beginning, get inspired. Order samples. In the end, it will be silk satin and powder pink chantilly lace. I could not back out, there was a deadline to meet. She, they were counting on me.

Start with the diamond back pattern and modify it to have a single continuity in the lace. On the front, a beautiful princess cut. Model the skirt yourself, resulting in a circle skirt 4m50 in diameter with flat pleats. Decide to give this dress a name, it will be the VENDôME dress.

Once the canvas is made, it's time to sew with the beautiful materials, everything must be done to perfection. Find the bible, the Atelier Charlotte Auzou e-book. Make it your bedside book for several months. Make this crazy connection. The secret given in the e-book is work with a tracing sheet beforehand. Arm yourself with patience but admire the result. An exceptional dress rhymes with no visible seams, still let yourself be guided by the e-book: the top is tripled. The sleeves are taken in a sheath, there are still no visible seams! Try to give volume to the silk satin. Look for a solution. Don't hesitate to take advice. Purpose two layers of tulle, one layer of silk organza, a lining. The only constraint is that silk organza does not support water otherwise it will lose its rigidity. Unfortunately, torrential rain was invited for the outdoor ceremony. The soaked dress lost a lot of its volume. But a rainy wedding means a happy wedding.

The details of the closure of the VENDÔME dress. A row of covered buttons. I advise you if you have buttons to cover to have them set either at Stragier if you buy your fabric from them or in a specialist store in Paris at Mireille Boutonnières. Living in Strasbourg, this little sister to Paris, confinements with a ban on moving, these impossible fittings to do. Consequence finishing this (these) handkerchief hems the day before the wedding. Blessing dad's professional ironing board. Finishing in the middle of the night.

Here is VENDÔME, a powder pink civil wedding dress. The color of seduction, romance and femininity. An ode to love for a wedding dress that dances with life. A skirt that turns and turns to dance in a whirlwind of life for two. It may be short, but all the techniques of a wedding dress are there. Inspired by her little sister and then loving to model, shape HER dress. Having tears in my eyes seeing her sister walk down the central aisle in the dress I made. Wanting to try the experience again for someone because I am waiting for my prince charming.

I sewed my sister's wedding dress; she and her partner announced the marriage to us some time before her 30th birthday. At that time, I had just gotten back into sewing. It seemed obvious to me to offer her this precious gift to mark her 30th birthday. My little brother, my parents and I all participated in buying the materials: it touched her enormously, the dress took on a very special value.

What I liked, beyond the technical challenge, is the meaning behind this project. My grandmother sewed my mother's wedding dress, and for my part, I learned sewing with my aunt, a few years after her death. If she had still been here, she would have sewn for sure with a lot of love my sister's dress, I wanted to perpetuate that. And I know how much the fact that I sewed her dress had value in my sister's eyes.

This is by far my most beautiful/biggest project; it's very impressive, we're afraid of making a mistake. But if we're patient, and take the time to study each step carefully, it goes almost by itself. I relied heavily on Charlotte's ebook, which is a goldmine. I always say in sewing "it looks much better than it is complicated!" It's such a source of pride afterwards, even more so when it's not for yourself (which was my case); it's a very beautiful experience, both technically and personally, so go for it!

Thanks to Elodie, Mathilde, Kelly, Julie and Audrey for their generosity.
