Sewing tutorial: sew the “Tank Top” pattern as a top

Sewing is a huge way to express your creativity and I enjoy pushing you to think outside the box when sewing my patterns. A pattern is not a one-time use and can be used multiple times without having to end up with a copy/paste wardrobe. That's why I created the concept of customization that allows you to sew tops and bottoms endlessly and get creations that are all different from each other.

In the latest collection of customizable patterns , the Marcel tank top allows you to sew summer jumpsuits and dresses thanks to its three versions. It is very easy to adapt the pattern to sew it without the bottom and thus obtain a feminine Marcel to wear with the skirts, shorts and pants in your wardrobe.

For this example, I sewed version B of the pattern. The tutorial works for all three versions offered in the pattern.

Supplies

VERSION A: 100 cm of fabric in 140 cm width
VERSION B: 135 cm of fabric in 140 cm width
VERSION C: 140 cm of fabric in 140 cm width

+ interfacing and iron-on bias for all three versions

The boss

To make this tutorial, you must purchase the Marcel Tank Top customizable pattern.

The modifications will concern the front and back pieces. The facings will not be worked.

Choose the size corresponding to your chest measurement. You can work on the patterns with margins included .

Extend down the center front and center back 10 inches from your height waistline. I like to wear my tops long enough to tuck into a skirt or pants. You can adjust this measurement to suit your preferences.

Then draw a line perpendicular to the middle of the front and another perpendicular to the middle of the back. To determine their lengths, do the following calculation:

"Small chest" patterns

Front length = (hip measurement + ease (6 cm)) / 4 + 1 cm + 1 cm seam allowances
Back length = (hip measurement + ease (6 cm)) / 4 - 1 cm + 1 cm seam allowances

For example, for a hip measurement of 98 cm.
Front length = (98+6) /4 + 1 + 1 = 28 cm
Back length = (98+6) /4 - 1 + 1 = 26 cm

"Large chest" patterns
Front length = (hip measurement + ease (6 cm)) / 4 + 2 cm + 1 cm seam allowance
Back length = (hip measurement + ease (6 cm)) / 4 - 2 cm + 1 cm seam allowance
For example, for a hip measurement of 98 cm.
Front length = (98+6) /4 + 2 + 1 = 29 cm
Back length = (98+6) /4 - 2 + 1 = 25 cm

Go back up with a vertical line perpendicular to the hem and draw a slight curve to join the side line at chest level.

Sewing

There are few adaptations to make compared to the instruction booklet. You just need to remove the invisible zip provided on the right side and replace it with a classic assembly seam. Finish with a hem with two successive 1 cm folds at the bottom of your Marcel tank top.

Happy customizing and happy sewing!
